Around Town

The Elk Valley makes up a portion of the East Kootenays and includes Fernie, Sparwood and Elkford smaller surrounding communities including Elko, Hosmer and Baynes Lake.

The region is a Mecca for outdoor recreation. Surrounded by the majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains and only a short distance to the US Border (Roosville, Montana) and AB border.

People come from all over the world for the powder, with an average winter bringing almost 9m/29ft of the white stuff to Fernie Alpine Resort. During the winter visitors and residents can be found skiing and snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and even snowshoeing. In the spring, when the snow retreats, new possibilities are revealed. Fly-fishing, hiking, river rafting and mountain biking all become the favourite pastime.

Downtown Fernie (2nd Ave), is comprised of heritage buildings that have changed little in a century and showcase many of Fernie‘s unique shops, restaurants and cafes. Fernie offers the perfect climate for both business and pleasure and the opportunity to adopt a four-season lifestyle, that it‘s rich and colourful history that can only lead to a bright and promising future.

To the east, the towns of Sparwood and Elkford all offer the same lifestyle for outdoor enthusiasts. The area has four local mines who employ a large portion of the community. Both towns have great community amenities and schooling options.

If you’re thinking about visiting or moving to the area, be sure to check out the local hockey team, the Fernie Ghostriders. A true Canadian experience.
